The neoclassical baroque style Roman Catholic Visitation of Our Lady Parish Church of Újlak ("Újlaki Sarlós Boldogasszony plébániatemplom") A klasszicizáló barokk stílusú római katolikus Újlaki Sarlós Boldogasszony plébániatemplom
The church was designed by Kristóf Hamon and Máté Nepauer, built between 1746-1759.
The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish Church of Újlak (in Hungarian "Újlaki Sarlós Boldogasszony plébániatemplom") is situated today at the border of the 2nd and the 3rd districts, which was the center of the former Buda-Újlak (or in German "Neustift") settlement. This village was re-founded by German settlers sometimes in the first half of the 18th century, on the site of the medieval Szentjakabfalva village, which was depopulated during the 150 years of the Turkish (Ottoman) occupation. At the birth of Budapest (in 1873) Újlak became part of the unified capital city, together with Óbuda town. In 1950 Újlak was divided along the Szépvölgyi Road between the 2nd and the 3rd districts (till then it completely belonged to the 3rd district).
The monumental Synagogue of Óbuda
The Óbuda Synagogue was a neoclassical style Jewish house of prayer, built by the plans of András Landherr in 1820-1821. From the 1980s until 2009 it was used as the Studio No. 5 of the public broadcaster Hungarian Television ("Magyar Televízió" or MTV). Nowadays it is functioning as a religious building again.
The remains of the Aquincum Military Amphitheater from the Roman times in the middle of Óbuda district
The ancient Roman amphitheatre of Óbuda (its full name is Aquincum Military Amphitheatre) was built around 145 AD, its elliptical-shaped arena was larger even the famous Colosseum of Roma, Italy (89.6 by 66.1 meters). The maximum width of the elliptical building is almost 132 meters, the capacity of its former grandstands was around 10-13 thousand people. Beside the "ordinary" ancient amphitheater games (e.g. fight against wild animals) the building was probably also used for military exercises by the Roman legions who stationed here. Otherwise two arenas of the ancient Roman Aquincum settlement survived until today, one is this so-called Military Amphitheatre, the other in called the Aquincum Civil Amphitheatre at the corner of the Szentendrei Road and the Zsófia Street. Of the two the latter is a little smaller and probably built a few years later.
